Cooking Breakfast Outside Montclair Glen Lodge - Moments Before Disaster
Cooking Breakfast Outside Montclair Glen Lodge - Moments Before Disaster

8/24/03 We went back to the shelter again to cook breakfast, but everyone in the shelter was still asleep so we quietly removed our food bags and decided to cook outside on the lee side of the rocks again. Soon a lady came out with two of her dogs and tied them to a tree near us before taking off for the privy. Just as we finished cooking one of the dogs lunged through our "kitchen" and knocked over our stove. Down it tumbled, bending the windscreen, the burner head, and the pot supports. The canister was dented and the head bent. Fortunately Tumble had just turned off the flame or we could have had a serious explosion. But, without a stove we can't eat! Of course when the lady came back she was very apologetic and offered to pay for replacements, but there's no store in the middle of the woods. We would have to get off the trail and find a new stove and have no meals in the meantime. And we have no wheels. What a mess. Our only hope was that there would be hikers in the next shelter that would allow us to cook on their stove. We exchanged info and got back on the trail at 8:30am.
