Battell Shelter | ||
8/16/03 As expected we got caught in the rain. Trail Trooper passed us and when we got to the shelter he was deep in conversation with Adam (pictured, right), the GMC caretaker. Trail Trooper signed the shelter journal and moved out in the rain. It was about 3pm. We chatted with Adam and put up our bug net -- with no objection. We ate an early dinner because Rough was hungry and cold.
Other hikers entered camp and except for one young man they were day trippers, just out for the weekend. An embarrassing moment occurred when Adam loudly and rudely announced in front of all the other hikers we'd have to take down our bug net because it wasn't allowed. We removed the support poles, but kept the net strung up around our sleeping bags. Then another of the day trippers announced he was a heavy snorer and had a hammock, but would was going to sleep in the shelter anyway because he "gets a better night sleep that way." The heck with the rest of us! One of the other day trippers had come into camp early and "reserved" space for two other hikers who were supposedly "only an hour behind" her. Well, they didn't show up until after dark and long after the snorer was going strong and everyone else was fitfully trying to get to sleep. They rattled and stomped around with headlights on making their meals, sorting their packs, and chatting with their early arriving friend. Just to add to the racket a mouse began nibbling on the roof or someone's pack. Who could tell. Not much hope for a good night's sleep.
