8/26/03 We turned off the road and passed through a field and under some power lines. There was a strange smell through this area. We hiked past oak trees, but no familiar firs. We were eager to get back into the woods. As we gained elevation we had occasional views of Camel's Hump, I-89, and the Winooski River below. After one hour we stopped for a snack and passed the junction to the Duck Brook Shelter. We crossed a brook, made a sharp left turn, and hiked up to some rocky overlooks facing south and east.
