8/27/03 From Puffer we returned to the forest. Our path was lined with ferns waving us on. We went down a steep drop followed by a long trudge up Mayo. We met Birdman, NoBo. He got his name from the tiny origami birds he makes out of candy wrappers and leaves hanging in the shelters or pasted into the shelter logs. We got very tired slabbing along steep rocks with the wind howling loudly around us. Slabbing is Rough's least favorite type of trail. As if trying to warn us off Mansfield the wind got louder and fiercer as we approached the mountain. We hiked up Clark and slabbed the south ridge east of the summit. We could see Lake Mansfield below. Slabbing along Clark reminded us of our least favorite hike, slabbing around Little Killington. We found a lookout and had a good view of Lake Mansfield below.
