Mt. Mansfield: Climbing the Forehead | ||
8/28/03 Next we came to the "Forehead bad weather bypass" for Mt. Mansfield. With the wind howling and the teeth chattering we debated taking the bypass. It went something like this, "Is this bad weather?" "Well, it's not snowing, raining, or lightning and it's not misting that hard." "You can take the bypass and I'll meet you on the other side." "No way! If you're going, I'm going." And so off we went. Within ten minutes it started to "mist harder." We were clinging to the edge of a wet cliff with the wind trying to blow us off. We debated turning back, but knew it would be more dangerous to go down what we had just come up. So we just kept going. In spite of the cold the exertion had us sweating in no time. It was the scariest climb yet. |
