7/30/03 The only remaining platform in the tenting area was surrounded by a group of unruly shouting delinquents, including two girls who got into a profanity laced screaming match and fist fight in front of our tent. One of the counselors came and apologized to us and told us they were taking these "disadvantaged" children home. Will, the GMC caretaker, stopped by and during his conversation with Rough advised us strongly against staying at Governor Clement shelter, our next planned stop. There have been lot of "incidents" there of townies hassling hikers, especially on the weekends, which is when we would be arriving. Skipping Governor Clement shelter means we will have to hike over twice as far tomorrow as we had planned, and we are already beat. The boisterous camp of children left and we had a quiet dinner and tucked into our tent. We talked about how we are doing so far and about going long tomorrow. Rough also announced that he doesn't like the camping part much -- so far -- except for our stay at Goddard Shelter. He prefers the hiking part, so although we're more efficient at packing and unpacking, we must come up with a better camping routine. We happily realized that physically we have felt no aches or pains in our legs. We may have our share of bumps, bruises, bites, blisters, scrapes, and sprains, but nothing to keep us off the trail, and except for Rough's stiff neck the first few days and Tumble's difficulty breathing, nothing really interferes with our hiking pleasure. |
