Nap Time at Cairn Village on White Rocks Mountain
Nap Time at Cairn Village on White Rocks Mountain

7/31/03 The more Tumble thought about having to hike extra miles because of yahoos and vandalism at Governor Clement shelter, the angrier she became. She set a "maddening" (fast and angry) pace, stomping through the woods well beyond her ability to breathe, until she collapsed from fatigue in Cairn Village, an extensive area of artistic rock sculptures created by hikers piling different sized and shaped rocks on top of one another in the abstract manner of Picasso-like people and structures. Rough reminded Tumble that we had agreed to go only as fast and as far as we could comfortably and that we needed to consider another option before Clarendon. He got out the LT guide and offered the option of hiking 9.9 miles to Minerva Hinchey shelter and then spending the next night at Clarendon, only 3.7 miles beyond Hinchey. It means we'd miss our early arrival at the Inn at the Long Trail and the "zero day" we were looking forward to, but we decided we could extend our stay. Revived by our new plan we got into the spirit of cairn village.
