Taking a Breather at Bear Hollow Shelter
Taking a Breather at Bear Hollow Shelter

8/31/03 We took our time going down the long and dangerous 3.1 mile, 2,300' descent off Whiteface. On our way we were passed by High Country, a NoBo and experienced distance hiker who complained that this section of the trail was really beating up his knees. We agreed. We continued hiking and looking for our next checkpoint, a "major logging road." We persisted and about 3:15pm we heard BJ barking a welcome as we approached Bear Hollow Shelter perched high on a rocky ledge. We still hadn't crossed a "major logging road" and wondered how we could have missed it. Unfortunately there was no place to tent on or near the rocky perch. Michael left a note to Marty in the log saying he was heading out to his car at VT 15 and going home. He had taken Marty's tent's footprint with him. We discussed several options for the night. We went round and round and finally decided to hike out to VT 15 because it was still early and only 3.9 miles, mostly a road walk.
