Rolston Rest Shelter
Rolston Rest Shelter

8/5/03 We arrived at Rolston Rest Shelter at 12:30pm and scouted out the tent sites, but couldn't find a flat one free of rocks or roots. Once again with rain imminent we decided to stay in the shelter. We were beset by bugs. Tumble flapped and slapped at them and tried to keep them out of the "mouse" net while she put it up. We could hear thunder in the distance and the skies grew dark. There were standing puddles in front of the shelter. While Rough filtered water and as the rains came so did fellow hikers. Tumble heard two AT hikers exclaim as they passed by, "Why does that sign say Long Trail?" Tumble shouted after them, "Whoa there, hiker. If you're looking for the AT you missed the junction four miles back." And that's just what they did, so back they went, an eight mile detour in the rain because they didn't read the sign and didn't realize the LT and AT are both blazed white. A farming family of four from West Haven, VT stopped at the shelter for lunch. Pete, and his son Alex from Sleepy Hollow, NY, hiking the LT SoBo, also stopped by. They were headed to the Inn at the Long Trail. Rough suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to turn in his room key and asked Pete to carry it back down for him. After wringing out their socks and eating a snack they headed off in the rain to dry beds at the inn. We ate dinner and went to bed with the rains pouring down and wondering if any more hikers would be stopping by.
