David Logan Shelter | ||
8/6/03 . We made it up and down Telephone Gap and arrived at David Logan Shelter at 2pm. We set up the "mouse" tent just before the skies opened up at 3pm. A flurry of hikers came dripping into the shelter. Jody and Jeanine, a couple of teachers about our age came in followed by Thunder and Lightning (Kevin and Derek) hiking well ahead of their parents, and Jingle Bells. Jody told us he saw bear cubs just off the trail somewhere north of the shelter. Brother Buzz and his Sister Buzz arrived just ahead of Jingle Bells who objected rightly, but good-naturedly that Thunder and Lightning violated the "first come first serve" rule of the trail by "reserving" bunks for their parents and relegating him to the floor. LT Lone Wolf was the next to arrive, howling her approach in the distance. She ended up sleeping on the floor under the table. The last to arrive were Camel Man and Apple Girl, but the shelter was full so they tented nearby in a tent he invented and hopes to market next year through EMS. We made a merry band at first, but it soon turned boisterous with eruptions of talking and clomping around at intervals throughout the night and into the early morning hours. Not even earplugs could drown out the noise. When we slept we slept poorly. |
