Sunrise Shelter
Sunrise Shelter

8/7/03 We got to Sunrise Shelter by noon and behold, the sun was out. We even saw our shadow for part of the hike today. Can't remember the last time that happened. In spite of the sunny sky we were sadly disappointed to see the once lovely and well maintained Sunrise Shelter looking dumpy and battered. The picnic table where we once had a cheery lunch was dismantled and seats burned in the fire pit that now sits in the middle of a once tidy "lawn." Graffiti covered every square inch of the pine walls. Our hopes of finally sleeping in our tent were dashed when we were choked by the smell of urine permeating the tenting area. Back to the shelter and our "mouse" net. Rough is tired of camping and Tumble is tired of her stink. We both need a break from hiking wet trails, wearing smelly wet clothes, and sleeping in shelters. We sat side-by-side next to the stream and paddled our feet in the cold water to wash them off. Back at the shelter we stuck our hiking poles inside our socks and lined them up in the shifting sun to dry while we ate dinner. Tumble kept moving them around to catch one last ray of sun. Rough's socks stink so bad he can no longer deny it. Not even a sealed plastic bag inside a stuff sack can contain their odor. Peeuuuu. No one else showed up at the shelter -- maybe the socks kept them away -- and we went to bed early.
