In honor of this coming Memorial Day weekend, we thought we would share some tidbits on the history of Memorial Day before we all get swept up in the warm weather and weekend festivities.
Memorial Day is our day of remembrance of those men and women who died in service to our country. It was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation’s Civil War dead by decorating their graves. The first known observance was in Waterloo, N.Y. on May 5, 1866. (In fact, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed Waterloo as the official birthplace of Memorial Day) In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, to be recognized on the last Monday in May. Today, Memorial Day is observed at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. . On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. Remembering the reason for this special day, we wish you a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday weekend spent with your friends and family. --http://www.history.com |
Welcome to the Official Web Site of the 47th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog)
Please scroll down and discover the story of our unit. Updated often!
Announcement:In 1997 I created the 47th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) website to honor the scout dogs and their handlers and to preserve the history of the unit in Vietnam from 1968 through 1971. Former platoon members, their families, and others contributed to the extensive content on the website. This year I donated the 47th website to the online archives of the Military Working Dog Heritage Museum (MWDHM). This donation provides a permanent home on the internet for the 47th website where it will be available to current and future generations for education and research. The website link remains the same, 47ipsd.us, and I will continue to accept contributions of content, provide updates and maintenance, and respond to requests from users. Thank you to the folks at the MWDHM for their willingness and technical assistance in hosting this website. Specific thanks go to the Board of Directors who assisted in this transition, including Mr. Albert Johnson, President, Ms. Dixie Whitman, Secretary, and Mr. Albert Bretado, Webmaster.
